“I Like Them Crows”
Artist: Julie Lawrence
12″ x 12″ x 9″
This mixed-media sculpture is dedicated to the memory of my grandma, Estelle. She was known for her love of animals and her habit of rescuing them—especially cats. The work is inspired by a printed photo from one of her albums, showing crows perched on a telephone line. She had written “I like them crows” on the picture in pen, with two arrows pointing to the birds. My grandma helped care for my brother, and me when we lived in California, as my mom was raising us on her own. In this sculpture, the handbuilt, raku-fired crow represents my grandma, while the wheel-thrown, raku-fired eggs symbolize my mom, my brother, and me.
