Resources For Artists
Coming November 21-22
The Pittsburgh Potters Tour is a two-day sales event showcasing the work—and workspaces—of our city's vast, vibrant community of ceramic artists.
The Pittsburgh Potters Tour invites visitors to explore ceramic studios across the region, meet local artists, and discover the creativity thriving within Pittsburgh’s pottery community. This self-guided experience offers a unique opportunity to see where ceramics are made, purchase work directly from makers, and learn about the craft. Along the way, you’ll visit a wide variety of spaces—from bustling community art centers and professional production studios to intimate backyard and basement workshops—each offering its own glimpse into the world of clay. You may even discover a new favorite potter along the way.
the Pittsburgh Potters Tour
Coming November 21 and 22
For potters, the Pittsburgh Potters Tour is much more than an open studio event. It serves several important professional and community-building functions.
The Pittsburgh Potters Tour is designed to support and strengthen the regional ceramic community by creating opportunities for artists to connect directly with the public and with one another.
The tour helps participating artists:
- Sell their work directly to collectors and the public.
- Increase visibility and build recognition for their work.
- Introduce new audiences to their studios and creative process.
- Develop lasting relationships with collectors and repeat customers.
- Connect with fellow ceramic artists throughout the region.
- Build a stronger and more connected ceramic community in Western Pennsylvania.
- Promote ceramic arts as an important part of Pittsburgh’s cultural landscape.
The tour is also an educational experience. Visitors gain a deeper understanding of handmade ceramics by meeting artists, seeing where work is created, and learning about the techniques, materials, and ideas behind the work.
By working together, participating artists create an event that attracts a larger audience than any individual studio could reach alone, benefiting both the artists and the broader ceramic community.
Rebranding the Clay Pittsburgh Potters Tour
As part of the ongoing evolution of the Clay Pittsburgh Potters Tour, we are rebranding the event to place greater emphasis on connecting artists with buyers and collectors. While visitors will still have the opportunity to see studios, learn about processes, and meet artists, the tour is increasingly being presented as a sales event rather than primarily a behind-the-scenes studio experience.
Historically, many visitors selected studios based largely on geography, often stopping at locations that were nearby or convenient. While this approach encouraged exploration, it did not always help visitors discover the artists and work that most interested them.
Our goal is to help visitors make more informed choices before and during the tour. Through the website, visitors can preview participating artists, view examples of their work, learn about their artistic interests and techniques, and identify the studios they most want to visit. This allows them to plan a tour experience that reflects their interests as collectors, buyers, and supporters of ceramic art.
We recognize that we cannot control where visitors choose to go or how many people visit each studio. However, by providing better information and encouraging advance planning, we can help visitors shop more intentionally and connect with the artists whose work resonates most strongly with them.
The website is becoming the primary tool for discovery and planning. Rather than simply serving as a directory of tour stops, it is intended to help visitors explore the full range of participating artists and make thoughtful decisions about how they spend their time during the tour.
Ultimately, the success of the Potters Tour depends on creating meaningful connections between artists and buyers. This rebranding reflects our commitment to supporting artists, increasing sales opportunities, and helping visitors discover exceptional ceramic work throughout the region.
Behind-the-scenes studio visits will be addressed in an exciting new series of programs. Stay tuned for more information about that.

About the Tour
The Pittsburgh Potters Tour is an annual two-day sales event, inviting visitors to shop for pottery and ceramic art directly from local artists, while enjoying a behind-the-scenes look at their studios and creative processes. Host studios all throughout the city welcome guest artists to share their space for the weekend, together showcasing an incredible variety of functional and sculptural work for sale. The Pittsburgh Potters Tour offers visitors a unique opportunity to support and connect with local artists, while deepening their understanding and appreciation of the craftsmanship behind every piece.
Why Participate?
Clay Pittsburgh organized the first Potters Tour in 2023, with the goal of facilitating meaningful connections between local potters and the wider public. The tour functions as both a buzz-worthy sales event, and as a way for visitors—buyers and collectors, fellow artists, students and the clay-curious alike—to connect more deeply with your work, and with you as an artist.
Over the past three tours, hundreds of attendees have expressed how much they enjoy discovering the immense variety and creativity on display, and learning more about the ceramic process as a whole through an immersive experience. Admiring your work in context gives buyers a greater sense of investment in the pieces they take home. Customers become part of the story of that new favorite mug or vase or centerpiece, forging a more memorable with the object and with you as the maker.

Support our mission
You didn’t become a potter to work in isolation. You became one because of the clay, yes — but also because of the community. The shared kiln, the late-night studio conversations, the moment another potter looks at your work and just gets it.
Clay Pittsburgh exists for you.
We connect Pittsburgh potters with each other and with a buying public that is genuinely hungry for what you make. Our annual Potters Tour puts your work in front of collectors who are looking for their next favorite artist — and that artist could be you. Our exhibitions, artist talks, and potter-to-potter gatherings create the kind of relationships that lead to collaborations, sales, new ideas, and lasting friendships.
Whether you’re just starting out and looking for your footing, or you’ve been throwing for decades and want to deepen your roots in this city’s clay community, Clay Pittsburgh is where Pittsburgh potters come together.
Your donation helps us keep doing this work — growing the tour, hosting events, and building the infrastructure that helps local potters get seen, get connected, and get their work into the hands of people who will treasure it.
Invest in Pittsburgh’s clay community. Invest in your fellow potters.
